If you're a big fan of Judd Apatow (and I am) then you have probably loved his first two movies which are The
40 Year Old Virgin and
Knocked Up. Now if you're like some people you probably said to yourself that I'm excluding a few others like
Pineapple Express and
SuperBad But those movies were only produced by Apatow. He wrote and directed only
40 Year Old Virgin and
Knocked Up.
Funny People is a different kind of comedy from his first two. It's much more serious. There are still the Apatow trademark genital jokes and yes, they are sidesplittingly funny, but they are more few and far between than his earlier films. The other movies had heart but this one goes a lot further.
Adam Sandler plays a comic who develops a rare disease and is given only a few months to live. So he decides he can't tell anyone who he's close with because he's only "Hollywood" close with them and they really don't care about him. So enter Seth Rogen's character. Sandler's character hires Rogen's character to write for him as he does a final stand-up comedy "tour" before he dies. Also, the only one that Sandler confides in about the disease is his new "friend" Rogen.
The acting is excellent and there are some very hilarious moments. The supporting cast is great and each scene that they are featured in is brilliant. The movie does drag in spots and it probably could have been 20 minutes shorter but all-in-all I really enjoyed it and if you like Apatow's earlier work you'll enjoy it to.
